Five in Fiber- An Up Close and Personal View

I am excited to have my work included in a show opening this Saturday, October 26 at Gallery 37 in the artsy/river/bay town of Milford, DE.
Notice the soft textural background in this poster?  It is a detail from one of my sculptural works. The photo was taken by Amy Tucker Photography. I met Amy at a women's networking event. Primarily a wedding photographer, I asked her to come by and see what kind of interesting shots she could take of my sculptural nets.

I use paper pulp, wire,  and collage are used to connect life experiences such as women’s work, family, trauma and loss, aging and my love, fear- and connection to water.

Shadows cast on the wall by the nets are an integral part of how the work is experienced. Shadows, like cancer, or other trauma, can offer us a new perspective on things- depending upon where we stand.

These filtering nets reference the body which houses our spirits as well as our baggage.

Studio Visit

A studio visit is a great way to introduce people to your work whether you are part of a studio tour, meeting with a gallery director or curator for a possible exhibition or an informal get together with another artist, friend or collector.

It also motivates you to clean your workspace and review your work. Always good when I get rid of the cobwebs and dust bunnies and clear off the work tables!

There may be the possibility of a show, a sale, or valuable feedback and insight.

Recent conversations from two different visits to my studio were energizing- and validating. It feels so good when someone "gets" your work.  I appreciated the comments, connections and insights... and made some discoveries along the way. One piece that I "accidently" brought out - it was rolled up with another piece, not only will be in my upcoming exhibition at the Siegel JCC Artspace in Wilmington in April, but will be a piece that the work together in a way that I saw- but wasn't sure was clear to others. Apparently it does, so there you go.

Open your door and see what walks in.

Effort (less)

Effort (less.)  Funny how we can work and work on something, falls into the overworked pile. Then we leave it, let it go.  Rework it and poof, effortlessly it comes together. Of course that is a myth- it's logging in all those miles/hours to get there.  That's what happened with this painting.  Had a different incarnation for months (more than a year) never felt right, but kept it up on a wall for the heck of it.

Then poof. I knew what I wanted to do.  Now Koi #6 is up at the 2012 Annual Regional Art Exhibition at the Center for Creative Arts with an Honorable Mention.  Opening reception is tomorrow night, October 18, 6-8 pm.

Come say hi.

Back home and ready to work...

The past two weeks have been a whirlwind of travel first to Hawaii, then West Virginia and Rehobeth Beach. It was great stepping into my former life in Hawaii with friends in Honolulu and on the North Shore. Went there to celebrate my dear friend and former employer Pegge Hopper's birthday and for my teacher and Dept. Chair of Printmaking at University of Hawaii, Allyn Bromley's retrospective opening at The Contemporary Museum http://www.tcmhi.org/cal_exhibits.htm. Two incredible women, whose work as artists http://www.peggehopper.com/and vibrant members of the art community in Hawaii is far reaching. They both at ages 75 and 82 respectively, look incredible as well!

Now back home, my Koi Pond Series is hung at Empowered Yoga Studio in Newark,DE and am getting ready for the reception next Saturday, July 17, 5:30 - 8:30 pm.

Also, continue to work on my nets for my installation at Fashion Center's 38th St. window... boys go to camp next week and I am looking forward to a block of time to be with the work and put it all together.
