Function, fashion, or fetish, what we put on our feet can say alot about who we are.
What began as an exercise in looking, has taken me on a journey of seeing, and listening, to the stories behind our shoes. Each painting session with the shoes began as a simple staging of the footwear. What was the most interesting perspective or vantage point? Was it the heels or toes, front or side view, cropped or full?
Often, I chose to paint a particular pair again and again or coupled with an object for color or contrast. Looking to put their best foot forward. There is an intimacy that comes with this private showing that interests me most. The stories reveal themselves in the creases and folds; the imprint of the foot that wore them, and expressed in the language of color, light, shadow and gesture.
