Last week I attended an informational evening at the Leeway Foundation regarding their Transformation Award. This award is unrestricted. I was awarded a Leeway Art & Change Grant in 2010 which is project based.

3 prior awardees sat on a panel with Sham-e-Ali Nayeem, the Program Director, they were bex, Ruth Naomi Floyd, and Magda Martinez. All were generous with their time, information and words of wisdom.

Here are a few gems to keep close to your heart, whether or not this award is for you.

Tell a story- don't be afraid to go to the dark places. Be honest about the struggle.

Be truthful about your work in the most basic way. Double speak will fade away.

Give yourself time to get there.

Kim's work is my collection, as is Mike's. Great memories of art making, exhibiting and being in a critique group than met on a regular basis. Mike Harada also shaped and glassed my beloved longboard!

Generating an Art Buzz for an Altered Book Workshop

The college has a catalogue, both in print and online, but we all know that there are so many things vying for our attention- and time, that as artists, we often need to educate, inform, and yes, market our classes and workshops.

Here are some things I plan to do.

Create a Facebook Event.

Blog about it.

Blog some more.

Create an email blast.

Create flyers to be distributed on DCAD campus, Hockessin Book Shelf (owner, Rebecca has even offered to generously donate old books to be altered for workshop participants), Tideline Gallery,
and Willow on State, Kennett Square, PA.

And of course, offer a link online to register. Course # FA0204

Any suggestions? What have you done in the past to generate a buzz on a workshop or class that you have taught?

"Hello from Germany,

Here I am sitting in a cafe in the airport waiting for my flight to Chennai, India. The reality of being a traveler is already felt with the awareness of a very large and diversified world to explore. Time has become timeless somehow. Traveling through multiple time zones and feeling fluid enough to function in the present. I hope I will feel this way for the next leg which is even more dramatic.

Some years ago I read about a workshop being given by Ricardo Barros on "Marketing Your Photos". It was given in Cape May, New Jersey, where I had never been. It was a marvelous experience. Richardo is a wonderful person, photographer and teacher.

We did a trade of photographs and I chose two of the wonderful and inventive portraits from the project "Facing Sculpture". One of which is this photo of Magdalena Abakanowicz. She is an amazing sculptor. I chose this portrait for her magnificent face and satisfying expression, as though she just finished one of her magical pieces. Her expression says "life is full and perfect."

Thanks NIki- safe and wonderful travels... looking forward to seeing the new work that will transpire from your adventure!

Wyeth's World

These two photos are of a farm I walk past with my dogs.
Remind me of the beauty the Wyeth's found in
this area.

Earlier this week I visited the Brandywine River Museum in Chadds Ford, PA for the first time. Known for its Regional and American Art, and comprehensive collection of three generations of Wyeths, located in a renovated old Grist Mill, it is a beautiful setting not too far from my home.

There were treasures on every floor. I pulled out my "cheaters" for the Still Lifes (with amazing trompe l'oeils) and Portraits, and was then, drawn into the Wyeth's world.

brilliant!

All 3 generations impressed me with their undeniable craftsmanship and skill. I found myself drawn into N.C. Wyeth's paintings for Treasure Island (Pirates, Adventure and fabulous dramatic light!) and studying Jamie's draughtsmanship and composition.

But, it was Andrew's work that moved me- almost to tears.

It was his drawings and studies for his paintings alongside the paintings - that I could see, not only his technical abilities, but his humanity. He painted his farmlife in Pennsylvania, his home in Maine, and the people and animals who touched him.

It was not trite, or sentimental, just a lifetime of looking, working - and loving.

Doesn't get any better than that.

"(Here is) ... one photo holding 3 of my favorite pieces of art.

The box is from Mary Linnea Vaughan of Sonoma County CA. The little bowl on top was turned by Harold Adams of Grand Island, Ne. and the alcohol reduction vase was created by Leroy von Glan of Norfolk, Ne.

Why? There's something happy and casual about these pieces. I know the artists personally which gives them a deeper resonance. I hide little items in the vintage art box like little secrets just for fun, acorns, a tiny china bell, a feather. They look beautiful together on a desk my grandfather made decades ago. It's a happy little corner in my house."

I love learning about new artists, seeing their work and... peeking into their homes! Hope you do, too. Thanks Patty for opening your door.

Seeing Red

I knew I had to have this painting the moment I saw it. I saw the color, it made me gasp, and that was that. The blanket was bright red; the woman was beautiful; she was blond (being one, I’m maybe a little partial to blonds); the stripes and angles energized the painting for me. But mainly, it was that RED!!! Or maybe the stripes!! No, it was the beautiful blond woman, with her coy look!! No, the red!!

In fact, it was all those things. It was painted just for me.

It was priced VERY high, for me, (heck, my first car – a Toyota Celica - cost less than this, brand new!), but I knew I had at least that much in my checking account. I didn’t care. I should have haggled on the price, at least a little (I will never hear the end of it from my daughter and my husband, who were with me at the time and thought I’d lost my mind!). But all I could think of was that I wanted to see this painting every day. It would excite my eyes every time I saw it.

That was several years ago, and it still does.

Before the holidays I had an idea for a blog post of what to get the artist in your life. I was thinking of luscious paints, beautiful papers, brushes... you get the idea. But soon realized that what I really wanted was a break - from commitments, obligations and all the busyness of everyday.

And that is just what I did this past Monday. My family was out of town. I cancelled plans. I did not drive anywhere and closed up my laptop. I meditated, journaled, walked, listened to music, worked in my studio and watched a film. The day was spacious. And just what I needed.

Artist Patricia Scarborough did post a lovely list on her blog with other worthwhile gift ideas that don't come in a box- and are appreciated any time of year!

The title of this painting refers to the blades on these skates, but it could easily be my state of mind.

The holidays tend to put me in overwhelm.

I WANT to send out cards to family and friends near and far, find the perfect gift for everyone on my list, remember all the people who provide services for us through out the year, and be the perfect hostess.

This year in particular, however, finds me still reeling and recovering from the past months of treatments, and our sons' injuries. I will reflect on how blessed we are to be celebrating this holiday together. We have so many wonderful people in our lives. If you are reading this, please know that I am truly grateful that you are a part of my life and wish you and yours a Happy Chanukah, a Merry Christmas, or whatever tradition you partake in- may it be peaceful and joyous. Sending blessings of love, light and healing to all beings. May there be Peace on Earth.

Since the studio is the public area of our apartment, I actually took down most of the art that wasn't ours this summer. This way,we're ready for studio visits. But we've kept some of our favorite pieces up in our bedroom. Of these, the one I look at before I go to sleep each night and wake to is probably the most inspirational and reminds me that all lovers feel as my husband and I do- like we're one. It's a litho by Ben Shahn of a couple kissing. I love Ben Shahn's wonderful scraggly line quality.

Speaking of collections, I have a huge collection of prints, most of them from print exchanges.

I did the Cascade Print Exchange last year. The print you contribute gets printed in a catalog, is exhibited, becomes a part of the university's permanent collection, PLUS you get back the loveliest images. No cost, just SASE. If it sounds good to you and your readers, it's listed half-way down the page in that URL.

These were recently purchased from the Dansko Outlet, in nearby Jennersville, PA. Don't let the word outlet mislead you- (though the prices are great). There were so many styles to choose from, all displayed in a friendly, serene environment, both inside and out. Natural wood, clean Scandinavian design, and with a lovely outdoor sculpture garden.

These new kicks are a hybrid of shimmery slippers and comfy clogs. Already put to the test with two full days of NYC gallery hopping last month, my feet came home as happy as my muse was fed.

I don't love to shop (except for art supplies or books) but this was easy, and, I already have my eye on a pair of boots.

Hawaii Calls- Artist as Collectors #6

A.Kimberlin Blackburn and I first met many years ago when we were given a show together at the Art Loft in Honolulu, which has sinced evolved into Fine Art Associates. Kim has her own unique visual language, seeped in nature, mystery and lore. She works with a variety of materials from paint to beads to fibre- all richly colored, textural and magical.

When I left the islands to get married and return to my Jersey roots Kim gifted Scott and I a wedding present; artwork of hers -my choice. Fittingly, the painting that I chose is titled Hawaii Calls for You. The right choice she said, as she knew that regardless of where we live, Hawaii would always call.

She was right. This piece reminds me of our friendship, a place I will always love, and Kim's commitment to her own voice as an artist.

The power of art- to inspire, evoke and remind us of who and what we love.

Sheila McCarthy plays Polly, a self effacing woman, who finds a job through a temp agency at Gabrielle's art gallery. Polly admires and secretly loves Gabrielle as she is everything that Polly is not; sophisticated, wordly, and savvy- especially in the art world where Polly is now privy to in a limited way.

Always with camera, Polly joyfully takes pictures of whatever and whoever she finds interesting or intriguing. Too insecure to call herself an artist, she boldly makes a move, only to be hurt by Gabrielle- hence the title of this post.

The film is offbeat in a charming way, as well as thought provoking. None of us aspire to be trite in our work. Quite the contrary. But our work has a life of its own, regardless of labling or judgement. That in itself, has value.

Trite as Flesh- also sounds like a great assignment for art students.

And the path, is rarely a straight line. But the journey is the adventure.

In her recent post as a guest blogger here, Karen F. Rose wrote about having a piece from her friend and mentor Mary Hatch.

Like Karen, I worked for another artist managing the Pegge Hopper Gallery in Honolulu for many years.

Surrounded by Pegge's beautiful paintings and drawings, I learned so much from Pegge about a committed art practice and managing a business. Pegge and I continue to be dear friends and our families are still a part of each other's lives as well. On a recent "big" birthday Pegge graciously and generously gifted me a painting of my choice. This painting is a cherished part of my collection. Pegge's draughtsmanship, sense of color and design inspire me daily and the painting is a reminder of our friendship and one of my favorite places on earth.

For years I admired Mary's paintings and when I found that she was looking for new painting assistant, I jumped at the chance.

While I was teaching a computer graphics painting course, I worked for her stretching canvas, updating computer files, packing and delivering paintings to galleries.

An accomplished and well respected painter, she took an interest in digital art and soon began to create original digital art pieces.

I like to think we learned from each other.

When I moved from Michigan, she was very gracious to gift me one of her prints.

Seeing this print each day reminds me of our love of art and our friendship.

Who Knew - Artists as Collectors #3

Just got back from a quick two day trip to NYC to meet up with some friends and see some art.

Headed over to Gagosian Gallery uptown to see Howard Hodgkin when Megan and I discovered that also at Gagosian was a show titled Collections from the Private Collection of Robert Rauschenberg. A great find for my new series Their Art/Your Walls- Artist as Collector. Apropo, and what a treasure trove! 3 floors of drawings, paintings, prints, and sculptures of his friends like Jasper Johns, Cy Twombly, John Cage, along with Duchamp, Matisse, Beuys, Morandi, and some Warhol to name drop a few.

Many of the works were signed "to Bob." Two of which were from dancer/choreographer and close friend of Rauschenberg's, Trisha Brown. Megan reminded me that Brown taught dance while we were Pratt Students. That class fulfilled the one gym requirement for our undergraduate degree. I don't remember her so much as I remember trying to pirouette across the gym floor without hitting a wall!

How many people can say that Trisha Brown was their gym teacher?

Kitsch vs. Art- Artist as Collector #2

Rabbits have been a part of my life and art for many years. Because of that people have given me rabbits, rabbits and more rabbits. Kinda kitsch, but fun.

Sheep, on the other hand are on my walls because they are art.

I first saw the work of Theodore Waddell at the Bernice Steinbaum Gallery many years ago when the gallery was in New York City. Scott and I bought this small drawing when we were in Seattle just after we were married. Excited to find an exhibition of his work at the Linda Hodges Gallery, I noticed it leaning against a wall and brought my husband back to see it. It became a wedding present to ourselves and now hangs in our dining room.

Betsey Reagan is a friend with a unqiue and quirky view of the world. Like Waddell, she is adept at depicting a range of animals, but sheep permeate her work. Anthropomorphic, they help us see ourselves with humor and irony. This detail, illustrates her subject and her own unique way of working with plaster and oil. In this case, on a small found college banner. A gift and a gem.

Willow on State, Kennett Square offers artists a discount when they purchase another artist's work from their gallery. Great idea. Incentive, encouraging, and helpful.

I have traded, bought and been gifted the work of other artists. I am also honored when a colleague hangs my work on their walls. So I thought it would be fun to share with you over time different artists and a selection of what they have chosen to hang on their walls.

I'll start. This is a shot from my home and a triptych in my collection.

I picked up from the Pyramid Atlantic store in Silver Spring, MD.

Eileen Foti is a gifted artist and master printer. She is also a good friend, so fortunately, I acquired this triptych through a trade. Adept in all printmaking, it is her impeccable drawing and lithography skills that shine through. Titled Caution: Hilo, the work is from her Images of Extinction series, and was her response to seeing so many things on her travels that were facing extinction. This work is about both a plant and a bird endangered from the Big Island of Hawaii.

Hauntingly beautiful, as well as quite personal, this 3 piece "altar" hangs in our bedroom. It also serves as a reminder of the power of art to celebrate, preserve and remember.

O. Fork

O. Fork. Can you believe it's November already?!

I started making forks, spoons, and knives out of wire dipped in a vat of over beaten flax or abaca several years ago. After they dried and were coated with encaustic, they look aged, yet alive, like an old relic.

After my grandmother passed, I inherited her set of sterling silver cutlery. This got me thinking about what we do and what - to do with things that may be of value, but not necessarily something we asked for (sterling silver, those old books, cancer, you get the idea) that comes into our lives one way or another.

The tea bags were from the daily cups of tea I make my husband every morning. Our ritual. Honoring the present, and another way of marking time.

However, just as I was getting ready to deliver the piece to Willow on State for my current exhibition, I added the finishing touches. The small pages between the prongs and the O. on the tea bag tag.

Now, it's complete.

Reading a recipe is the start of a narrative with a life of its own. Another page from the Ladies Luncheon book I picked off the curb when my neighbors moved away, another idea to chew on. (ok, ok)

Only in Art- Fancy Cakes without the Calories

I have always been seduced by Wayne Thiebaud's paintings and prints of cakes and pies, his lush color and graphic composition. There is also a sense of nostalgia in those rows of desserts that remind me of the NJ Diners I would frequent growing up. The ritual of sitting down to a meal and the narrative that goes along with that particular time and place has been a part of my work over the years.

A mixed media piece with handmade paper incorporates images of a set of stirling silverware I inherited from my grandmother and an old Ladies Luncheon cookbook I found. Both of which, speak of a time when a women's place in the home feels a bit out of touch, but really, not that far away.

It's easy to feel like a specimen rather than a person as you move through all the stages from diagnosis to healing. And, there is no recipe for getting through the physical and emotional trauma of any life altering experience.

But I found, that the more I made work about it, the more control I felt I had of the situation. Focusing on process. finding images and various materials that intuitively felt right with each piece helped me find distance, healing and even the lighter side of life.

“I found my Roopalee sandals shortly after I moved to Singapore, in a tiny little shop in Little India. The Indian women wear these sandals along with their gorgeous multi-colors saris and bangles. I discovered Asia with my Roopalees, roaming through the side streets of Saigon, the back alleys of Kuala Lumpur and the beaches of Bali. Nanci’s painting perfectly captured the comfort, beauty and uniqueness of my favorite sandals along with the kilometers they covered in my explorations”

Adventures and inspiration are never far away, especially if you are on foot and take the time to explore.

Helen, my friend visiting from Australia and I spent an afternoon in Old City, Philadelphia. It was there at Three Sirens that we found some far out shoes and and met Aubrie Costello- a "Sole Sister."

Aubrie, it turns out, is not only a super friendly sales clerk, but a wonderful artist. She also, paints shoes and incorporates them in installations. I shared with her my Walks thru Life: Shoe Portraits Series, and she in turn, showed me her work.

House dreams seem to be a barometer of where my head is emotionally. Renovating or moving dreams stayed with me for months following both of those activities. My nightime sleep reflecting the challenges and anxiety that came from those experiences during the day.

During a summer printmaking program at the Santa Reparata Graphic Art Center in Florence, Italy the house in my dream was a vast and gorgeous palace. No doubt, reminding me that my days spent in the museums, streets, and art studios of Florence had the power to inspire and transform me well into my return to Oahu and my failing marriage.

The most recent House Dream took me to an urban setting of undiscovered rooms including an exquisite glass atrium, and one filled with lots of old and unused easels. Meandering through I met interesting neighbors and discovered street windows surrounded by brightly painted bricks that offered exciting possibilities for work, not unlike my exhibition last summer at theFashionCenter in NYC.

Waking up to a reminder that opportuities and possibilites can be found in every situation - whatever the Real Estate Market!

Tools of the (Ocularist) Trade

It has been almost 2 months since my son Nate's left eye was severly damanged in an accident.

Nate is an inspiration. He is strong, resilient, and feisty as ever. Getting fitted this week for his temporary eye shell reaffirmed these traits.

Our trip to Legrand Associates introduced us to the world of the ocularist, a professional specializing in the fabricating and fitting of custom made artificial eyes. Joe Legrand, a second generation ocularist was kind, patient and generously allowed me to snap photos in his office, or studio, as I see it. After all he is located in the Medical ARTS Building on Walnut St.

As a mother I appreciated his kindness and compassion.

As an artist, I was drawn to the tools and materials that he will use to make Nate's scleral shell prosthesis.

Dream Catchers - or Not

Dreams are a vital part of my creative life. I may wake up with an image, an object, or even a process that I bring into the studio with me.

The wire and pulp paper sculptures I am currently working on as part of my Inherently Found Series are from a nocturnal muse as well. These "nets" are a metaphor for what we catch, or what attaches itself to us as we move through life.

Presently, it is the process I am loving. Dipping the wire mesh into a bucket of over beaten flax pulp repeatedly, and hanging them out to dry is like "wax on, wax off" of Karate Kid 1.

My nets are not the dreams catchers of Native American lore, and they may not keep away the nightmares, but they are certainly a way of noticing the moments of quiet and tranquility that can still be found in my life.

As a 2010 Leeway Art & Change Grant recipient, I was given the opportunity to have a free portrait session with a photographer for The Leeway Foundation's upcoming Artist Book. These sessions were offered on 3 different dates at 3 different locations in Philadelphia. My session was this past Saturday at Philadelphia's Magic Gardens with artist, printmaker and photographer Kay Healey. Kay is also the Education and Outreach Manager at the Gardens and a previous recipient of a Leeway Art and Change Grant.

It was hot, hot, hot... but I had a great time chatting with Kay as she took me to the different nooks of the Gardens for a variety of shots. Have yet to see the outcome of our session but was happy to finally see this Magical Garden right in Philly which are the creations of one wildly creative mosaic artist named Isaiah Zagar.

Shopping often overwhelms me - unless of course it is an art supply or hardware store.
Then I LOVE the choices, the materials, the possibilities- lurking in each item.

Worn sandals took me outside my comfort zone the other day. While my Italian green and gold cork sandals were at the shoe maker for repair and my deliciously comfortable Naots (and yet to be painted) sandals are showing their wear, I took myself to a DSW for some retail therapy.

Short on time and so many choices, I decided to try on only what "shouted out my name." Fortunately, the call quickly from a festive European flowery slip on sandal with a sleek & sexy heel.

My new muse inspired me to pick up the brush again and promises to take me out for a very fun adventure...

any ideas?

Like these green and gold cork sandals, that were Made in Italy, the irregular cobblestone streets of Italy led me to new places on both sides of the Atlantic.

It was just 20 years (!) this summer that I spent 3 weeks studying printmaking at the Santa Reparate Graphic Art Center in Florence, Italy. Not unlike Elizabeth Gilbert in her memoir, Eat, Pray, Love, I embarked on an adventure to travel, study, and follow my passion.

Those weeks were about all art; seeing, creating, and living it- with eating, walking, and some shopping in between. Inspiration was everywhere and the time and distance also gave me clarity. Upon my return, I filed for divorce, finished the renovation of my plantation home in Hawaii, and began graduate school.

Recent down time at the beach gave me some much needed space. I felt like I was finally coming up for air. The weeks following Nate's accident were filled with doctors appointments for he and I, surgery, chemo, and just coping. Beach - and water time were just what I needed to helped me remember to just be and experience the moment.

Cy Twombly passed away the day before I arrived on Long Beach Island and the New York Times featured a lengthy obituary on his long, and often misunderstood career. What resonated most personally, was the following paragraph from the Times article:

In the only written statement Mr. Twombly ever made about his work, a short essay in an Italian art journal in 1957, he tried to make clear that his intentions were not subversive but elementally human. Each line he made, he said, was “the actual experience” of making the line, adding: “It does not illustrate. It is the sensation of its own realization.” Years later, he described this more plainly. “It’s more like I’m having an experience than making a picture,” he said. The process stood in stark contrast to the detached, effete image that often clung to Mr. Twombly. After completing a work, in a kind of ecstatic state, it was as if the painting existed but he himself barely did anymore: “I usually have to go to bed for a couple of days,” he said.

Art as experience. The joy, the beauty, and often the agony is in the process. Exhausting as it can be, it is what makes us artists, and human.

Perhaps my favorite shop to feast in the colours and textures of the Paris store displays was at Boutiques le Jacquard Francais on 53 rue Bonaparte. This small, intensely vibrant shop, was a kaleidoscope of colours and textures near our apartment in St. Germaine.

As we wandered through the streets of Paris on our recent trip, I was drawn to the shops and window displays. Whether it was at the Organic Market or a small neighborhood boutique, everything was a visual feast.

This window was one of many that reminded me
of my early days working in the visual merchandising
department in the Cellar at Macy's Herald Square.

Eating Well on a Weak Dollar

One of my favorite parts of staying in our neighborhood in Paris, was the organic market on Sundays at the Rennes Metro Station just a block and a half away from the apartment on rue Notre Dames des Chanpes.

Wandering through the market with camera and empty stomach, we sampled, purchased and enjoyed the fresh, organic local flavor, visually and gastronomically.

With the weak dollar against the strong Euro, our souveniers were limited to a few small gifts for the boys and their sitters, but we ate well- local style, and our great memories are priceless!

Live like a Parisien

Hotels may offer amenities (and often tiny rooms abroad), but apartments offer authenticity. If you do your homework you can find the right fit, even if you book down right down to the wire - as we did!

There are several sites online that we visited. VRBO (Vacation Rentals by Owner) offers rentals all over the globe. You choose your location, your dates, your budget and the availability pops right up with photos, and often reviews, which we found very helpful.

We saw several that we liked, but kept coming back to a bright one bedroom apartment in the Saint Germain neighborhood of Paris offered by Drawbridge to Europe, Inc. Fortunately, it was still available. We booked it and were not disappointed. Situated on Rue Notre Dames des Champs in the 6 arrondisement in Paris, it was a quiet street with a metro right on the corner.

Situated above a shop called Bagels and Brownies, there was a line there every day around lunch.

We also had a kitchen, complete with fridge, stove (which we never used)
and a microwave- which we did: to cook our dollars (not on purpose!, try finding someone in Paris to change partially burnt $ for Euros!!!!)

Non, but we did see it "parked" on the side of the road as we left Charles DeGaulle Airport.

Non, Scott was tempted to take it for a ride!

Using OnePass Miles and some gifted United Miles. (Mahalo Nui Loa xox) We left on Continental Airlines from Newark (NJ not DE.) An easy flight, we arrived on an absolutely beautiful spring morning.

Which brings me to how we got to our Paris destination...

At the suggestion of my friend Karen F. Rose, we booked the SuperShuttle online ahead of time.
Meet Roger, our friendly non English speaking driver who took us, (albeit the long way, thanks to another passenger, Nick who was extremely hyper and was a bit annoying American staying on the OUTSKIRTS of Paris)

That much longer than needed drive from the aiport to our apartment gave me a great opportunity to brush up on my high school french (thank you Madame Richardson!) and to catch another glimpse of French life.

Yep, that's it. Have one, and make sure it has not expired, and will not, expire in the next 6 months.
Tres importante.

I learned that the hard way, AT THE AIRPORT en route to Amsterdam several years ago. In the end, it all worked out out, several hundred dollars and a day later, I joined Scott in Amsterdam.

This time, it was Scott's password that was expired. Having learned that lesson, I pulled his out when we booked our flights. It cost us a little more to expedite it as we were within two weeks of departure.

Down to the wire, that's us. A nail biter. But, it did arrive.

As did we.

Resting and recuperating as I allow a new way of being to unfold. One of not being so busy, so driven, so something. It is challenging. I like doing things, being out in the world, but to quote one of the few, but favorite passages Ecclesiastes 3: 1-8 from the Bible that I know... "to everything there is a season..."

This is my time of watching the shadows on the wall- or the ground.

That said, we are off to Paris a week from today! A belated birthday present and a wonderful getaway before all my treatments begin this month.

Whether you are looking at art, or making it; art has the ability to transform our experience.

Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center gets it.

The Evelyn H. Lauder Breast Center houses a major collection of paintings, works on paper, photographs and some sculpture, as does their other buildings. Art fills the hallways and entry ways.

I was pleased to see some of Joyce Kozloff's small maps in the building on 53rd street where my plastic surgeon has his office.

The only place that art was missing was in my room- though it did have a magnetized bulletin board.

Fortunately, the 15th floor in the main hospital housed a recreation room, along with an outdoor patio (fresh air and sunshine!) and some interesting shadows (of course I had my camera!)

There was also live music at the time, a library, work tables, a sink and storage closets full of art and craft supplies. A young woman assisted me in gathering up an assortment of quality brushes, heavier paper, watercolors and watercolor pencils.

I spent some time working freely, playfully, and enjoying the reprieve from being a patient.

Still here at Memorial Sloan Kettering... all is well except for some rashes and swelling that kept me here longer than expected. I pretend that I am at a spa and am enjoying the R & R and room service!

I am on a "Women's Only" floor. This is a more pleasant experience than 8 years ago, when I was treated in New Jersey at a hospital where there were not enough beds in Surgical Oncology. Placed on the orthopedics floor where the touch was not always sensitive and the environment not too appealing.

Here, there is art on the walls and a recreation room on the 15th floor with entertainment and activities as well as an outdoor patio.

I quickly found some paints, brushes and paper and did a few loose watercolors, which are now pinned up in my room

The phone calls, emails and FB comments from family and friends continues to remind me how truly blessed I am.

And as in Tribute above, I am in the company of Angels who have been taking care of me.

First day of spring... yeeha! Nature and marketing collide as there are buds on the trees, daffodils sprouting up, and of course lots of candy eggs in the grocery store.

This is another verision of Unrequited Love with the half of goose egg (that never got eaten) and the pair of shoes that were never worn.

Coincidentally I also got my surgery date today. It is Friday, April 1, up at Memorial Sloan Kettering in NYC.

That also happens to be the date of the First Friday Art Stroll in Kennett Square with my Leeway Art and Change Grant Partner, Lisa MacMain and the YoungMoms Project. We are meeting this week to prepare for the event but I will be up in NY for the exhibition. There is a great team of women who will be there to share the wonderful collographs and prints the YoungMoms have created during this residency. Hope you can stop by The Garage and say hello to Lisa, Rosa, Carolyn and the YoungMoms if you are in Kennett Square.

She told me that she bought a bunch of sneakers from a local clothing store that was closing. She put them on ebay but decided to keep this pair for herself.... so they are KEEPERS!

The Other Power of Pink

I know, you thought I was going to write about the Ubiquitous Pink of Breast Cancer Ribbons and all the bands, bags, and garments that support the worthy cause.

That, my friends I will blog about at another time on our Butterfly Kisses Blog. (cause, yes there is lots to tell, after I catch my breath!)

This Power of Pink speaks of the spirit of the girls, the moms- teen and more mature (!)

that worked together to make this residency such a warm, wonderful success.

The babies brought their joy and curiosity.

There were many others that brought their warmth, their energy, and their generosity to the table; the Staff at The Garage - Patty, Rosa, Diane, Ally, along with the young women who interned there as well.

The visionary creator of the YoungMoms group, Lisa MacMain was an amazing partner to work with. Her support in this project truly ensured its success. She also enlisted a host of incredible volunteers, like Trish Swigart, Beth Lankenau, among others, who fed us, held babies, cleaned up. Whatever it took.

A special thanks to Carolyn Viens below, who documented much of our sessions. She also has wonderful photos of her world travels on her site, as well as a workbook for Moms and Daughters called Leave Your Footprints Along the Way .

Connecting at the Catwalk

Sunday's Crazy Catwalk for Kidds was an afternoon of high energy inspite of the March winds and rains outside.

People came for fashion, food, and art- all for Supporting Kidds.

It also was a great opportunity to see and meet new people. My passion is creating community through art and it is also the mission of J. Christian and Marcy, owners of J. Christian Studio.

Committed to giving back to the community, they create 4 events a year where they and their wondeful staff, donate their talents, their services and their vision to local charities. Talk about Paying it Forward!

My favorite part of the day is having people stop by my table and talk about their shoes and the stories behind them.

I was also there signing copies of our book Butterfly Kisses and Wishes on Wings: When someone you love has cancer... a hopeful, helpful book for kids. I continue to be inspired by the courage of individuals and families who demonstrate grace and resilience in the wake of this disease.

These Aren't Your Neighbors Crocs

Greetings from Red Bank, NJ, my old stomping ground and former home town.

Also the home of a super groovy shoe store- If the Shoe Fits where these fabulous puppies were found.
They are also my first pair of clogs (at least as far back as I can remember) More fashionable than the omnipresent Crocs, and comfy too!

These delectable clogs are so cool and attract attention where ever they go! My only regret is that I did not buy another pair because they are starting to show their age (aren't we all?) and I can't find anything else like them.

Naming a painting or work of art can be a tricky thing. Sometimes it pops right into your head, other times it reveals it self slowly, or you pick a working title, of sorts until the right one comes along.

I am never one for "Untitled." I enjoy the quest of finding the right word or phrase that let's the viewer frame the work in such a way, even if that framing is open to interpretation.

In the case of these two small paintings, Timeless just may be the working title.

The paintings are of my husband Scott's Cole Haan shoes. They are classic and classy, just like Scott.
They are also in excellent condition which says alot about my guy. He takes VERY good care of everything he owns. He can have a pair of shoes for 15 years, sunglasses, even longer. I admire the way he always know where his stuff is and everything is in it's place. These shoes go to the office, out to dinner and can do a mean salsa!

I thought of titling these paintings Classic and Classy, but that title doesn't quite fit right at the moment.
So for now, they are Timeless because class never goes out of style.

Unrequited Love

Bought these shoes shopping with my 13 year old son. He convinced me to buy them (after I tried on, but refused to buy the 4" stilettos he also rallied for!) I liked them enough to paint, but not enough to keep.

As for the egg, same story only different.

Wanted to support a local farmer who had an assortment of her eggs for sale. We didn't need chicken eggs so figured I would try the goose egg.

Turned out, more fun to paint, than to eat.

With some help, we got my table top press to The Garage for our second session of Teen Moms Make Art (working title) as part of my Leeway Foundation Art & Change Grant.

Fashionista for a Cause

These are my Art of Survival Shoes, the first inaugural event in 2004.

I loved them when I bought them- but felt a tad guilty thinking I may have spent too much. So, I kept looking at other stores, with them in tow. None compared. I kept them, I wore them and still do. Now, that is the Art of Survival. No regrets.

Objects of Desire

As the mother of boys who loves sports, it's all about the sneakers. They know what they want and they "must" have them.

These are Nate's. He is like a puppy with BIG PAWS that he will grow into. He bought these with his birthday money from Grandma and Grandpa, promised to take care of them. Of course, I still find them laying all over the garage floor. Fortunately, Dini has not used them (yet) as a chew toy.

Here's a pair of Scott's tried and true winter boots that were not so lucky. He has had for 20+ years.

Unfotunately, they did not escape Dini's radar this year. Scott was not too happy.

He takes VERY GOOD care of his things as you will see in a future post. Luckily, he likes Dini

(at least for the time being.) Nanci, the wife in me feels badly that Dini got them. Nanci, the artist, sees this as a compelling subject for my Walks thru Life: Shoe Portraits Series.

Red Hot Red

These shoes were bought on a whim a few years ago. Everyone woman should have a pair of red shoes.
They're fun, they have sex appeal without one of those 4" heels which would just make me topple over!
It's like trying on a blonde wig if you are brunette. Do blonde's have more fun? Do red shoes sizzle?
Maybe, yes, yes, yes.....

I am going to wear them to my Salsa Dance class tonight with my Valentine. 1,2,3,4...

Not Your Mother's Avocado Green

The title and (coupling of my subjects) may seem a bit random. But as my son often points out, Life is pretty random. Plus, I have taken the liberty of changing the title of this painting sinced I posted it in Pay Attention earlier this month.

Perched on my kitchen counter, this cut avocado caught my husband's eye.

Appreciating it from a visual (and not culinary!) perspective, Scott suggested that I paint it. It's lovely green meat and rich brown pit seemed like the perfect companion to my pseudo biker boots. A staple in my fall and winter wardrobe, they are hip, easy to slip on, and cheap (shhh!)

I wear them all the time, and no animals were harmed... perfect for the animal lover and non meater that I am!

Pay Attention

In the begining of each yoga class we are asked to form an intention, a word, a phrase a feeling that may come up for us. It could be patience (always a good one) trust, laugh, find joy.... etc. whatever resonate with you at the time.

One of my yoga teachers, Susan Smith shared hers with us recently - Pay Attention. I liked it when she said it. Simple Direct, like Be Present. Pay Attention invites us to open our eyes and notice the world around us. Like in the daily paintings I am doing of shoes the past month and a half. I must pay attention to the relationshapes of color, line and form on these small canvases. I find that this return to some art basic or foundation is like returning to breath in yoga. The essential.

And when you pay attention to breath or to color or form, that attention allows the stories within these objects the time, the space and the grace to reveal themselves.

A Better Way to Get Tubed

February's issue of O Magazine is all about Creativity.

Breezing through the magazine I came upon a side bar of particular interest titled 7 Ways to Spark Your Creativity. (Who doesn't need a spark this snow covered January day?) by designer Anna Rabinowicz.

At the top of the list is a book recommendation, Not a Box by Antoinette Portis in which "a rabbit sits in a cardboard box and uses his imagination to transform it into a racecar, a mountain, a robot."

Not only do I have a pet rabbit and I know how creative she is, but I figured I could use this approach to
see my upcoming brain MRI in a new way.

Old way: Claustrophobic tube with a jack hammer in my head. (VERY SCARY)

New way: A very cool time travel, space ship ...
Some time to chill and not have a phone stuck to my head or my fingers dancing on the computer keys
Time to practice yoga/meditation off the mat (even though that was checked off my bucket list last week when I had an hour and a half breast MRI!)
A full body massage (ok that's a stretch)

Any other ideas out there?

Mules and the MOST Unwelcome Muse

What do my wedding Mules have to do with the most unwelcome Muse - The Big C, Cancer,
have to do with each other?

Nothing. absolutely nothing. I was very happy painting my mules, and Koi Pond, and making stuff with wire and pulp. I enjoyed working from life again, looking at color, shape, and composition and meditating on the present moment.

So this week's news that my cancer is back is not very welcome.

Sure, I did some of my most powerful work from that experience, but that was old news, and I liked it that way.

Apparently fate has other plans. So here we go. Hope you'll check in and share your insight, your experiences and give me something to laugh about along the way.

Tiny Garments can tell Big Stories with a Collograph- Part 1 Video

Teen Mom project funded by the Leeway Foundation Art & Change Grant at the The Garage to begin shortly! We will be working together to create collographs.

A collograph is a printmaking process. This particular form of printmaking is accessible, rich in texture, and image development as it enables you to work additively or subtractively. For our upcoming project with the teen moms we will be using donated, discarded and recycled infant and toddlersʼ clothing as the “plates” or print matrix. The clothing becomes the plates as they are painted with a gel medium that hardens the surface and allows it to be embossed or inked and printed on a table top etching press.

These altered garments can be a perfect vehicle for sharing stories and giving voices to the experiences of responsibility and lost youth, and the joys and challenges of parenting, at any age.

Here is a short video of preparing the clothing so that they will be the collographic plates that will be embossed or inked up.
